I have been teaching for 16 years now in grades K through 4th. As you can see from my white hair, this is not my first career but it is, most certainly, my favorite. Although, I always wanted to be a teacher as a child, I took a little detour after high school and decided to pursue a career in dentistry. I graduated from Duke University in 1979 with a B.A. degree in chemistry and zoology. I graduated from the UNC School of Dentistry in 1983. After a short stint in private practice in Pittsboro and Raleigh, I spent 11 years with the Craven County Health Department and travelled to elementary schools in eastern N. C. as a public health dentist. My favorite part of my day was eating lunch with the children and reading their work on the walls of the schools. I finished my career in dentistry at Wanye Community College as the dental program director. It was there, that I realized that my true calling was in education. My mid-life crisis was not a sports car but a career change. I spent the next two years at East Carolina University taking courses in elementary education to get my teaching licensure. In 2007, I received National Board Certification in Early Education. I have never looked back. I tell folks that the first half of my life I followed my head, the second half, my heart. I absolutely LOVE what I do now. When I am not working with children, I love spending time with my husband, Mike, my two sons, Jared and Caleb and my Lord and Savior . I love animals, music, art, gardening, dancing and gelato.
